The bulbous asymmetrical and hollow body worked to closely resemble a curled fish, with silk pad and attenuated wood mallet incised with wishes for global peace and a quotation from the Hannya shingyo; the lengthy inscription on the wood storage box including the Tsuchinoto-hitsuji year (1919), red seal, kao, and signature Tessai Doshi

Auction result misses estimated price range

In June 2021 a collector was able to acquire the work A Lacquered Burlwood Mokugyo (Buddhist Liturgical Wood Gong) by Kano Tessai for USD 1,020.00 (€ 860.90). This price was achieved in the auction Edo Sparkle and Tokyo SplendorJapanese Art of the Last Three Centuries at Bonhams in New York and was even below the estimate range of USD 1,500.00 – 2,500.00 set by the auction house. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Kano Tessai - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work A Noh Mask Of Okina, which sold at auction in June 2021 for USD 2,040.00 (€ 1,721.81).

Auktionsergebnis verfehlt die Schätzpreisspanne

Im Juni 2021 konnte ein Sammler die Arbeit A Lacquered Burlwood Mokugyo (Buddhist Liturgical Wood Gong) von Kano Tessai für USD 1.020,00 (€ 860,90) erwerben. Dieser Preis wurde in der Auktion Edo Sparkle and Tokyo SplendorJapanese Art of the Last Three Centuries bei Bonhams in New York erzielt und lag noch unterhalb der von dem Auktionshaus angesetzten Schätzpreisspanne von USD 1.500,00 – 2.500,00.
