Fashioned from a section of bamboo decorated with Kannon seated on a rock beneath a pine tree in katakiribori, inscribed Kanzeon Bosatsu gedatsu Tessai Dojin to (The Bodhisattva Kanzeon, carved by Tessai the Daoist, praying for) deliverance, with the artist's idiosyncratic kao (cursive monogram)
With a wood tomobako storage box inscribed Senbai Kannon Daishi zōzu (Teascoop decorated with an image of Kannon), the underside of the cover inscribed Kanoe-saru sangatsu sekku no hi teppitsu o ijitte tonai ni oite Yuigadokuson'an Tessai doshi shiki (Toying with my iron brush at the Yuigadokuson ["I am the Greatest") Retreat in the city on the day of the Girls' Festival, third month, kanoe-saru [1920), recorded by Tessai the Daoist), with Tessa

Auction result misses estimated price range

This work of art by Kano Tessai could be acquired at Bonhams in New York in June 2021 for an unexpectedly low price. In the Edo Sparkle and Tokyo SplendorJapanese Art of the Last Three Centuries auction, the work A Bamboo Senbai (Tea Scoop) changed hands for USD 765.00 (€ 645.68) - missing the lower end of the estimate range of USD 1,000.00 – 1,500.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Kano Tessai - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work A Noh Mask Of Okina, which sold at auction in June 2021 for USD 2,040.00 (€ 1,721.81).
