signed, dated and inscribed 'Just Gantz Madras 1840' (lower left), further inscribed 'In the Grounds of Mr Chambers residence at Grundy, Madras, with Indian natives, a lodge gate and a windmill' (on the old backing paper, according to the previous cataloguing)

In September 2021 Bonhams in London held the auction Travel & Exploration, which included the work A Windmill In The Grounds Of An Impressive Colonial Residence, Possibly Government House, Madras Walnut Frame by Justinian Gantz. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 3,570.00 (€ 4,153.74), 19% above the upper estimate. Other works by Justinian Gantz have achieved even higher prices, we observed the highest auction result so far of GBP 4,112.50 (€ 6,881.47) in September 2000 for the work Indian figures and an elephant in a street outside a European house, Madras.
