Artwork auctioned at four times the upper estimate price
When the work Rocks at Colgong (Kahalgaon) on the Ganges, Bihar, India by Joseph Mallord William Turner was auctioned at Christies in Paris in July this year, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - GBP 80,000.00 but the actual price achieved was more than four times as high at GBP 327,600.00 (€ 382,209.91). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Joseph Mallord William Turner achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Rome, From Mount Aventine in December 2014 with an auction result of GBP 30,322,500.00 (€ 39,035,113.21).
