oval, 3 in. (76 mm.) high, silver-gilt frame, the reverse centred with a shuttle-shaped reserve with initial W in seed-pearls on a plaited brown hair panel, within a split-pearl border surrounded by translucent blue glass on a radiating guilloché foil ground

The »bidding war« ended at GBP 1,880.00 (€ 2,991.67), 25% above the upper estimate. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by John Wright - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Captain Gilbert Heathcote, facing left in blue coat with gold buttons and gold epaulettes, white waistcoat and black stock, which sold at auction in May 2002 for GBP 6,572.50 (€ 10,292.62).
