In October 2018 Christies in New York held the auction European Art: Part I, which included the work Thisbe by John William Waterhouse. The »bidding war« ended at USD 3,732,500.00 (€ 3,293,769.86), 49% above the upper estimate. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by John William Waterhouse - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work St Cecilia 'In a clear walled city on the sea, Near gilded organ pipes... ...slept St Cecily', which sold at auction in June 2000 for GBP 6,603,750.00 (€ 10,467,756.68).
Oberer Schätzpreis um 49 % übertroffen
Im Oktober 2018 führte Christies in New York die Auktion European Art: Part I durch, in der auch die Arbeit Thisbe von John William Waterhouse zur Versteigerung kam. Das »Bietergefecht« endete beim Preis von USD 3.732.500,00 (€ 3.293.769,86) und damit 49% über dem oberen Schätzpreis. Für andere Arbeiten von John William Waterhouse mussten die Käufer allerdings auch schon deutlich tiefer in die Tasche greifen – das bisher höchste Auktionsergebnis haben wir für die Arbeit St Cecilia 'In a clear walled city on the sea, Near gilded organ pipes... ...slept St Cecily' beobachtet, die im Juni 2000 für GBP 6.603.750,00 (€ 10.467.756,68) versteigert wurde.
