Artwork auctioned at ten times the upper estimate price
The work Self-Portrait by John Smart was worth GBP 60,000.00 (€ 66,925.43) to a buyer in July 2020. This price was achieved in the auction Old Master Day Sale including Old Master Paintings, Drawings and British Works on Paper at Sothebys in London and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of GBP 6,000.00 many times over. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by John Smart - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait Of Muhammad 'Ali Khan, Nawab Of Arcot And Prince Of The Carnatic (1718-1795), which sold at auction in April 2008 for GBP 120,500.00 (€ 153,620.47).
