Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work The Yacht Royal Charlotte In Two Positions Off The Coast by John Cleveley the Elder was auctioned at Sothebys in New York in January 2017, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 30,000.00 – 50,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 25,000.00 (€ 23,161.02). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by John Cleveley the Elder achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work King George Iii Reviewing The Fleet At Spithead, Off Portsmouth Harbour in December 2014 with an auction result of GBP 290,500.00 (€ 373,969.84).
