Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work The Ladies' Flower Garden: Six Plates by Jane Wells Loudon was auctioned at Christies in New York in July 2003, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 2,000 – 3,000, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 1,195 (€ 971). Admittedly, works by Jane Wells Loudon have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work The Ladies' Flower Garden of Ornamental Annuals. London: William Smith, 1840. 4° (270 x 201mm). 48 hand-coloured lithographic plates with over 300 figures of plants by Day & Haghe after Mrs. Loudon. (Occasional light spotting, a few plates with small nick in November 2000 with an auction result of GBP 3,760 (€ 6
The Ladies' Flower Garden of Ornamental Annuals. London: William Smith, 1840. 4° (270 x 201mm). 48 hand-coloured lithographic plates with over 300 figures of plants by Day & Haghe after Mrs. Loudon.
