Auction result well in line with expectations
In July 2017 Christies in London held the auction Old Master & British Drawings & Watercolours, which included the work Portrait of a gentleman, traditionally identified as Arthur Hill, 2nd Marquess of Downshire (1753-1801), small full-length, in a yellow frock coat and breeches, his left arm resting on his cane, a coach and four beyond, in a classical landscape by Hugh Douglas Hamilton. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of GBP 250,000.00 – 350,000.00, the actual price achieved of GBP 269,000.00 (€ 300,162.69) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Hugh Douglas Hamilton - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work [Double Portrait of Mary, Countess of Erne, with her daughter Lady Caroline Crichton, later Lady Wharncliffe, full-length, seated, the former in a brown dress with a yellow sash, wearing a large straw ha
