This artwork by Gilbert Stuart achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in London in July 2014. In the Old Master & British Paintings Evening Sale auction, the work Portrait Of The Mohawk Chieftain Thayendanegea, Known As Joseph Brant (1742–1807) sold for GBP 4,114,500.00 (€ 5,189,678.16) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 1,500,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Gilbert Stuart; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot George Washington (Vaughan type) sold at auction in May 2018 with the realized price of USD 11,562,500.00 (€ 9,907,883.46).
