Auction result misses estimated price range
In January this year a collector was able to acquire the work The Port of Ripa Grande, Rome by Gaspar van Wittel for USD 478,800.00 (€ 440,965.19). This price was achieved in the auction Remastered: Old Masters from the Collection of J.E. Safra - Selling Without Reserve at Christies in New York and was even below the estimate range of USD 600,000.00 – 800,000.00 set by the auction house. Admittedly, works by Gaspar van Wittel have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work The Island of San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice, from the Bacino; and The Entrance to the Grand Canal, with the Santa Maria della Salute in July 2003 with an auction result of GBP 1,517,250.00 (€ 1,983,148.05).
