This artwork by Gaspar van Wittel achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in London in December 2020. In the Old Masters Evening Sale auction, the work The Molo, Venice, looking West towards the entrance of the Grand Canal sold for GBP 1,582,500.00 (€ 1,767,793.54) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 800,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Gaspar van Wittel; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot The Island of San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice, from the Bacino; and The Entrance to the Grand Canal, with the Santa Maria della Salute sold at auction in July 2003 with the realized price of GBP 1,517,250.00 (€ 1,983,148.05).
