GAO YONG (1850-1921) Calligraphy in Running Script – A Narrative on Calligraphy by Sun Guoting Hanging scroll, ink on paper 172 x 46.3 cm. (67 3 ⁄ 4 x 18 1 ⁄ 4 in.) Inscribed and signed, with one seal of the artist Dated autumn, jiwei year (1919) Dedicated to Shaozhang NOTE: Gao Yong, also known as Yongzhi, was a native of Renhe, Zhejiang Province. He lived in Shanghai and was the official county minister of the Jiangsu Province. Gao was an expert in calligraphy and was skilled in cursive script. Additionally, he had an extensive collection of paintings and calligraphy. In 1909, Yao Hong, Huang Jun and himself established the “Yuyuan Calligraphy and Painting Association” in the Yuyuan Garden in Shanghai. They often sold their paintings to fund their activities.
