inscribed 'The Chaise Match Run on Newmarket Heath on Wednesday the 29 t h of August 1750./This Match was the Consequence of a Wager of 1000 Guineas laid by ye. Earls' of March & Eglintowne on the/one side With Theobald Toafe and Andrew Sprowle Esq r e s . on the other. That four Horses Should Draw a Carriage with/four Running Wheels with a Person in or upon it 19 Miles in one Hour which was Perfom'd in 53 Minutes & 27 Seconds/Three of the horses had won Plates & all bred & Train'd for Running. the Two Leading Horses including Riders, Saddles &c/Carried about 8 Stone each Wheel Horse about 7 Stone. the Chaise with the Boy that Rode in it weigh'd about 24 Stone.' The price achieved of GBP 17,500.00 (€ 20,425.63) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 15,000.00 – 20,000.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Francis Sartorius - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Full Cry, which sold at auction in April 2015 for USD 81,250.00 (€ 72,791.61).
