signed and dated 'Dorothy Tennant/1883' (lower right) and inscribed 'Not for Sale/Portrait of Gambetta/Miss Dorothy Tennant/2 Richmond T.' and 'This was the noblest Roman of them/all:/..... and the elements/So mixed in him , that nature might/stand up,/and say the the world/This was a man!/(Julius Cesar)' (on labels attached to the reverse)

This artwork by Dorothy Tennant achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in London in May 2003. In the BRITISH AND VICTORIAN PICTURES auction, the work Portrait of Leon Gambetta (1838-1882), half-length, in a black jacket and white shirt, at a writing desk sold for GBP 940.00 (€ 1,309.66) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 400.00. Admittedly, works by Dorothy Tennant have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work The Bathers in April 2006 with an auction result of USD 14,400.00 (€ 11,406.84).
Oberer Schätzpreis um mehr als 100% übertroffen
Dieses Kunstwerk von Dorothy Tennant erzielte im Mai 2003 bei Christies in London einen unerwartet hohen Preis. In der Auktion BRITISH AND VICTORIAN PICTURES wurde die Arbeit Portrait of Leon Gambetta (1838-1882), half-length, in a black jacket and white shirt, at a writing desk für GBP 940,00 (€ 1.309,66) versteigert – und damit weit über dem oberen Schätzpreis von GBP 400,00. Freilich wurden Arbeiten von Dorothy Tennant auch schon für ein Vielfaches dieses Preises versteigert – das bisher höchste Ergebnis erzielte nach unseren Aufzeichnungen die Arbeit The Bathers im April 2006 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von USD 14.400,00 (€ 11.406,84).
