Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Master Hope Finlay, 1843–1847 by David Octavius Hill was auctioned at Christies in New York in April 2017, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 3,000.00 – 5,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 500.00 (€ 458.93). Admittedly, works by David Octavius Hill have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work The Mad Horticulturist, William McNab, Keeper of the Royal Botanical Garden, Edinburgh, c. 1845 in February 2016 with an auction result of USD 3,250.00 (€ 2,990.43).
