Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work A young couple with two goats (recto); A nude male torso seen from behind (verso) by Claude Gellée was auctioned at Christies in New York in January 2020, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 30,000.00 – 50,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 25,000.00 (€ 22,536.73). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Claude Gellée achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work A Mediterranean Port At Sunrise With The Embarkation Of Saint Paula For Jerusalem in December 2013 with an auction result of GBP 4,450,000.00 (€ 5,352,659.84).
