Artwork auctioned at four times the upper estimate price
The work Four-character Calligraphic Couplet in Seal Script by Chen Hongshou was worth HKD 378,000.00 (€ 43,738.93) to a buyer in December this year. This price was achieved in the auction Cultured Legacy: Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy from the Chang Shiu Sig and Tung Shui Wah Collection at Christies in Hong Kong and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of HKD 80,000.00 many times over. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Chen Hongshou achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Seven Sages Of The Bamboo Grove in March 2012 with an auction result of USD 1,650,500.00 (€ 1,237,813.11).
