Upper estimated price slightly exceeded
In June 2002 Christies in London held the auction VICTORIAN PICTURES, which included the work The Way to the Mill by Charles James Lewis. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 7,170.00 (€ 11,090.37), 20% above the upper estimate. Admittedly, works by Charles James Lewis have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work A Woodland Ramble "When daisies pied and violets blue And Lady-smocks all silver white, and cuckoo buds of yellow hue" - William Shakespeare, Love's Labour's Lost, Act V, Scene 2 in November 2007 with an auction result of GBP 48,500.00 (€ 67,912.55).
