Auction result misses estimated price range
In September 2001 a collector was able to acquire the work Sailing vessels at the mouth of the Thames by Walter William May for GBP 235.00 (€ 379.42). This price was achieved in the auction British and Continental Watercolours and Drawings at Christies in London and was even below the estimate range of GBP 250.00 – 350.00 set by the auction house. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Walter William May achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Perilous Situation of H.M.S.V. Intrepid In Baffins Bay - August 2. 1851.; And H.M.S.V. Intrepid Marooned On An Iceberg in September 2004 with an auction result of GBP 2,868.00 (€ 4,178.31).
