Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by Ben Shahn achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in New York in October 2018. In the American Art auction, the work Freedom Of Speech (Design #2) sold for USD 200,000.00 (€ 176,491.35) - well above the upper estimate of USD 70,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Ben Shahn; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Scabbies are Welcome sold at auction in September 2006 with the realized price of USD 262,400.00 (€ 206,825.88).
