etching, 1546, watermark Double-headed Eagle in Shield with Crown and Initials M (similar to Briquet 326, 1589-91, Brünn), a good though slightly later impression of this rare etching, printing with a light platetone, with margins, some foxing and minor staining, a small rustmark in the sky, at tear and three small paper losses in the lower margin, the sheet backed in this area, an old paper guard with associated staining along the left sheet edge where previously bound, generally in good condition

This artwork by Augustin Hirschvogel achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in London in December 2012. In the Old Master Prints auction, the work Castle Yard (Sch., B. 71; Holl. 44) sold for GBP 17,500.00 (€ 21,582.36) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 10,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Augustin Hirschvogel; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Landscape with a Castle on a Rock at Centre sold at auction in January 2021 with the realized price of GBP 32,500.00 (€ 36,752.99).
Oberer Schätzpreis um 75 % übertroffen
Dieses Kunstwerk von Augustin Hirschvogel erzielte im Dezember 2012 bei Christies in London einen unerwartet hohen Preis. In der Auktion Old Master Prints wurde die Arbeit Castle Yard (Sch., B. 71; Holl. 44) für GBP 17.500,00 (€ 21.582,36) versteigert – und damit weit über dem oberen Schätzpreis von GBP 10.000,00. Trotz des guten Ergebnisses ist dies nicht der höchste Zuschlag für ein Kunstwerk von Augustin Hirschvogel; den erzielte unter den von uns beobachteten Auktionen die Arbeit Landscape with a Castle on a Rock at Centre im Januar 2021 mit dem Hammerpreis von GBP 32.500,00 (€ 36.752,99).
