Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Figures on a rocky outcrop in an extensive landscape (illustrated); and The ruins of Houlton Castle, Cheshire by Anthony Devis was auctioned at Christies in London in March 2011, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 500.00 – 700.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 325.00 (€ 367.74). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Anthony Devis achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work A pastoral river landscape with an elegant couple conversing in October 2015 with an auction result of GBP 9,375.00 (€ 13,113.28).
