Upper estimate price exceeded by 59 %.
The work Saint Matthew holding a book seated on a cloud surrounded by angels: a study for a pendentive by Andrea Appiani was sold in the Old Master and 19th Century Drawings auction at Christies in London in July 2004. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 2,390.00 (€ 3,611.82), 59% above the upper estimate. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Andrea Appiani achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), as First Consul, three-quarter-length, holding a sabre in June 2004 with an auction result of USD 769,100.00 (€ 631,496.84).
Oberer Schätzpreis um 59 % übertroffen
Die Arbeit Saint Matthew holding a book seated on a cloud surrounded by angels: a study for a pendentive von Andrea Appiani wurde im Juli 2004 in der Auktion Old Master and 19th Century Drawings bei Christies in London versteigert.
