This artwork by Ammi Phillips achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in New York in October 2000. In the Important American Furniture, Folk Art and Decorative Arts auction, the work Portrait of a Man, The Agriculturist, circa 1840 sold for USD 11,162.50 (€ 13,154.02) - well above the upper estimate of USD 4,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Ammi Phillips achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait of a Young Girl and her Cat in January 2007 with an auction result of USD 1,248,000.00 (€ 960,147.72).
