Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Portrait of Mr. Dilbee of Pine Plains (Portrait of a Man with Red Hair) by Ammi Phillips was auctioned at Christies in New York in January 2008, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 30,000.00 – 50,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 29,800.00 (€ 20,079.51). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Ammi Phillips achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait of a Young Girl and her Cat in January 2007 with an auction result of USD 1,248,000.00 (€ 960,147.72).
