What is the human being? And what will he be in the (near) future? The artist Gerd Rehme has been dealing with artificially augmented humans for several years, even before the topic of artificial intelligence was discussed as intensively worldwide as it is now. Rehme combines painting, the genre that traditionally represents art itself, with electronic parts and iron rust: the transformation to the artificial in which man finds himself becomes tangible in Rehme's works. However, the artist does not limit himself to physical changes, but deals with the subject in all its complexity: the ethical development of humans is also influenced by new technologies. Artificial intelligence is not empathic and is dependent on algorithms with which it is »trained«. Rehme poses the questions of how humane the human being remains as an artificial being and whether the »human« part will always determine or must subordinate itself to technology. His works can be seen in a solo exhibition at the Kunsttankstelle in Lübeck: HUMAN? runs from April 4 to 14.

Gerd Rehme initially began painting as a self-taught artist before deciding to study at the Akademie für Malerei Berlin. He is expected to complete this in 2025 as a master student of Ute Wöllmann. Rehme, who is taking part in the Art.Salon artist program, works in Travemünde. He has shown his artworks in various exhibitions, for example at the Mark Rothko Museum in Daugavpils, Latvia, at the Gallery Steiner in Vienna and the Pashmin Art Gallery in Hamburg, as well as at art fairs in Strasbourg, Luxembourg, Miami and New York, among others. Rehme was already a guest at the Kunsttankstelle in 2023 with the solo exhibition Suche nach Mensch – von BILDZeitung bis KI.Art.Salon

Dive deeper into the art world

London, Tate Britain

It was one of the most moving decades in the history of the United Kingdom: the 1980s, characterized by strikes, protests and AIDS. Photographers documented this period and in some cases became political activists themselves through their images. The exhibition The 80s: Photographing Britain opens on November 21 at the Tate Britain in London.

Guido Klumpe

It is in the context of functional architecture in urban spaces that Guido Klumpe finds the motifs that he stages with his camera as the poetry of the profane. His picturesque images unfold an opulent effect with a reduced formal language, showing us the beauty of the moment in the flow of everyday life.
