Otto Modersohn was born in 1865 and is best known as a landscape painter in the French tradition. He was a co-founder of the Worpswede artists' colony and married the painter Paula Modersohn-Becker, who was early and intensively involved with new art movements in Paris. After the early death of his wife, Otto Modersohn moved with their daughter to Fischerhude in 1908. The village, which he described as »fairy-tale-like«, enriched Modersohn's painting with new stimuli.
After his death in 1943, interest in his work continued, and the museum named after him was finally opened in Fischerhude in 1974. Thematically changing exhibitions are shown in the almost 500 m² area. Since 08 January until 03 April 2022, the show Otto Modersohn. Retrospective. Sehen − Fühlen − Machen III, which attracts visitors with new acquisitions and loans from private collections, is open to the public.
