Joseph Beuys, Niki de Saint Phalle and Gerhard Richter are just some of the famous personalities portrayed by Alice Springs (1923-2021). Her pictures enjoyed a reputation for capturing the personality of her subjects as if in a fleeting moment. Alice Springs – the pseudonym of June Newton – began photographing in 1970 and quickly became an influential fashion and portrait photographer. The Museum Schloss Moyland near Kleve is showing around 200 photographs in the exhibition Alice Springs. Retrospective. The curators Matthias Harder and Antje-Britt Mählmann are focusing on portraits of artists. Other highlights include works that have rarely been shown in public to date and were discovered in the artist's former apartment in Monaco in 2023. The presentation will be on display from September 15, 2024 to February 2, 2025; admission is free on the day of the opening.
June Newton, née Browne, worked as a theater actress in Melbourne. In 1947, she met Helmut Newton when she modeled in his studio. From 1960, the couple lived in Paris, where Newton worked as an art director for her husband. Her career as a photographer began due to a bout of influenza: Helmut Newton was unable to attend a photo session for an advertisement. June Newton quickly learned the craft of photography and stood in for her husband. Shortly afterwards, she chose her stage name Alice Springs and became a sought-after fashion photographer.
In July, the exhibition Willy Maywald. The artists at home – Les artistes chez eux, which also ends on February 2, 2025. Maywald (1907-1985), who came from Kleve, lived in Paris and was one of the most acclaimed fashion photographers of his time. The exhibition focuses on his unique portraits of artists, which provide very personal insights.
