When Lovis Corinth left Munich in 1901, he already had his first successes as a painter, but he had not yet achieved his breakthrough. With most of his works he could hardly attract attention, and so he hoped for greater success in Berlin, where he also founded a painting school. His first student was Charlotte Berend, more than 20 years his junior, who served as his model. This developed into a relationship that led to marriage in 1904. Even after that, Berend-Corinth and their joint children were repeatedly portrayed by Lovis Corinth.
