The exhibition Gerhard Richter Künstlerbücher at the Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin is a special one among the many Richter presentations: From February 10 to May 29, 2022, it will feature Richter's artist books, the first time they have been shown in an exhibition. Since he created the first artist's book together with Sigmar Polke in 1966, they have been an important part of his oeuvre. In them, he deals in small format with his own work and the social expectations of artists that have changed over the decades. Richter published overpaintings of well-known works or abstract experiments in the artist books, which were set in a completely different context in book form than in exhibitions.
The occasion for the show is Richter's 90th birthday on February 9. The Dresden-born painter is one of the most famous and expensive living artists in the world. Richter carefully selects the subjects of his works and for decades has surprised with new painting techniques. The exhibition Gerhard Richter Künstlerbücher, which is well worth seeing, now provides comprehensive insights into a previously lesser-known area of his work.
