Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by Zwelethu Mthethwa achieved an unexpectedly high price at Phillips in New York in May 2010. In the AFRICA Theme Sale auction, the work Untitled from Sugar Cane Series sold for USD 13,750.00 (€ 11,116.50) - well above the upper estimate of USD 6,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Zwelethu Mthethwa; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Untitled from Sugar Cane Series sold at auction in May 2010 with the realized price of USD 27,500.00 (€ 22,233.00).
