Artwork auctioned at 15 times the upper estimate price
When the work Three Friends of The Winter by Zhang Ruo'Ai was auctioned at Christies in Hong Kong in November 2005, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - HKD 800,000.00 but the actual price achieved was more than 15 times as high at HKD 12,440,000.00 (€ 1,361,119.59). Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Zhang Ruo'Ai; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Autumn Landscape sold at auction in May 2016 with the realized price of HKD 18,040,000.00 (€ 2,085,090.26).
