Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Portrait of a gentleman, seated full-length in a red smoking jacket; together with a Study of a chair by William Leighton Leitch was auctioned at Christies in London in March 2011, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 500.00 – 700.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 375.00 (€ 424.31). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by William Leighton Leitch achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work The Villa of Lucullus At Miseneum in November 2005 with an auction result of GBP 48,000.00 (€ 70,518.07).
