Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work View of Edinburgh looking south from the Firth of Forth, with shipping in the foreground by William Frederick Settle was auctioned at Christies in London in October 2006, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 4,000.00 – 6,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 3,600.00 (€ 5,378.72). Other works by William Frederick Settle have also sold for higher prices; the highest price we have seen at auction so far was achieved in May 2005 by the work Warships and other vessels in a calm at GBP 6,000.00 (€ 8,857.88).
