Auction result well in line with expectations
The work HMS ‘Nemesis’ and boats attacking a masked Battery, February 23rd 1841 (First Opium War) by William Adolphus Knell was sold in the China Trade Paintings: Selections from the Kelton Collection auction at Christies in London in November 2019. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of GBP 3,000.00 – 5,000.00, the actual price achieved of GBP 3,500.00 (€ 4,109.86) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by William Adolphus Knell - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work The East Indiaman Exeter making for the Ladrone Islands, China, 1805, which sold at auction in May 2012 for GBP 11,250.00 (€ 14,017.01).
