Notes:
1. Wei Zhihuang, sobriquet name Kaoshu, was a native of Nanjing. He started very poor and sold paintings for a living. His calligraphy took after the Huangting jing, and he painted landscapes from out of his own inspiration, never taking after any ancient master or copies. Each painting by Wei was distinct and he never painted a second based on or similar to the first. In his later years, he painted with a hard brush and thick ink, but was also able to paint flowers with light ink which were naturalistic and elegant. For brief biography, see Zhongguo Meishujia Renming Cidian, Shanghai Renmin Meishu Chubanshe, 1981, p.1498

Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Verdant Peaks by Wei Zhihuang was auctioned at Christies in Hong Kong in October 2001. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of HKD 200,000.00 – 250,000.00, the actual price achieved of HKD 211,500.00 (€ 30,150.45) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. Admittedly, works by Wei Zhihuang have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Bamboo And Rock in November 2015 with an auction result of HKD 1,120,000.00 (€ 136,792.27).
