In July 2016 Christies in London held the auction Victorian, Pre-Raphaelite & British Impressionist Art, Maritime Art, Sporting & Wildlife Art, which included the work A frigate healing in the breeze off the Eddystone lighthouse by Thomas Whitcombe. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 6,250.00 (€ 7,426.35), 25% above the upper estimate. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Thomas Whitcombe achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work A view of St. Helier, Jersey, with Elizabeth Castle beyond in October 2007 with an auction result of GBP 132,500.00 (€ 190,278.72).
