Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Portrait Of A Gentleman, Traditionally Identified As Fulwar, 4Th Earl Of Craven, On His Hunter by Thomas Spencer was auctioned at Sothebys in London in May 2012, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 6,000.00 – 8,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 2,750.00 (€ 3,426.38). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Thomas Spencer achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Flying Childers in December 2019 with an auction result of GBP 52,500.00 (€ 62,048.86).
