This artwork by Thomas Rowlandson achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in London in December this year. In the Old Masters Part II: Paintings, Sculpture, Drawings and Watercolours auction, the work The elopement sold for GBP 3,276.00 (€ 3,773.83) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 1,800.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Thomas Rowlandson achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work A gaming table at Devonshire House, London: Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, Harriet, Lady Duncannon, the Prince of Wales and others gambling in July 2017 with an auction result of GBP 87,500.00 (€ 97,636.56).

Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Thomas Rowlandson erzielen.
