Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Mornington, a light bay racehorse, with jockey up by Samuel Henry Alken was auctioned at Sothebys in London in April last year, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 3,000.00 – 5,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 1,512.00 (€ 1,803.01). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Samuel Henry Alken achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Start for the Derby; and Winning the Derby in May 2017 with an auction result of USD 118,750.00 (€ 105,687.08).
