oval, 2 15/16 in. (75 mm.) high, gold frame, the reverse with elaborate hair, gold wire and seed pearl memorial in the shape of a weeping willow and an urn on a pillar inscribed 'Forget me- Not' and surrounded by the motto 'THERE IS BUT ONE ROAD TO HAPPINESS; THE ONE WHICH LEADS TO HEAVEN' on opalescent glass

This artwork by Peter Paillou achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in London in May 2002. In the IMPORTANT PORTRAIT MINIATURES, GOLD BOXES & OBJECTS OF VERTU auction, the work A young gentleman, facing right in blue coat with gold buttons, yellow waistcoat and checked white waistcoat, tied cravat sold for GBP 2,987.50 (€ 4,678.47) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 1,200.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Peter Paillou; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot A Cockerel sold at auction in July 2011 with the realized price of GBP 6,500.00 (€ 7,459.72).

Trotz des guten Ergebnisses ist dies nicht der höchste Zuschlag für ein Kunstwerk von Peter Paillou; den erzielte unter den von uns beobachteten Auktionen die Arbeit A Cockerel im Juli 2011 mit dem Hammerpreis von GBP 6.500,00 (€ 7.459,72).
