Artwork auctioned at three times the upper estimate price
The work Portrait Of Elizabeth May, 1646 by Matthew Snelling was worth GBP 22,500.00 (€ 27,053.71) to a buyer in July 2010. This price was achieved in the auction An Exceptional Eye: A Private British Collection at Sothebys in London and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of GBP 6,000.00 many times over. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Matthew Snelling; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot A gentleman, in black habit slashed on front and sleeves to reveal white, white lawn collar with tassels, long brown curling hair; tan-coloured curtain and sky background, gold edge border sold at auction in November 2007 with the realized price of GBP 23,300.00 (€ 32,626.03).
