Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work A forest floor with a snake, frog, snail, butterflies and other insects by Carl Wilhelm de Hamilton was auctioned at Christies in New York in May this year, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 10,000.00 – 15,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 6,300.00 (€ 7,330.09). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Carl Wilhelm de Hamilton achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Forest floor still lifes with lizards, snakes, Painted Lady butterflies, a Red Tiger moth, snails, thistle and convolvulus in April 2002 with an auction result of GBP 146,750.00 (€ 237,437.65).
