Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by Jules Breton achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in New York in February 2019. In the 19th Century European Art auction, the work French Le Matin sold for USD 1,215,000.00 (€ 1,067,756.39) - well above the upper estimate of USD 600,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Jules Breton; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot French les Communiantes sold at auction in May 2016 with the realized price of USD 1,270,000.00 (€ 1,140,547.82).
