This artwork by Józef Pankiewicz achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in London in June 2009. In the 19th Century European Paintings including German, Austrian & Central European Paintings, The Orientalist Sale, Spanish Painting and The Scandinavian Sale auction, the work Polish La Ciotat, Provence sold for GBP 49,250.00 (€ 57,793.22) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 18,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Józef Pankiewicz; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot The Garden Path framed 42.5 x 34.8 x 2.5 cm (16 3/4 x 13 5/8 x 1 in). sold at auction in November this year with the realized price of USD 89,400.00 (€ 81,958.20).
