In January 2003 Christies in London held the auction THE COLLECTION OF MONSIEUR AND MADAME GERALD BAUER, which included the work The Plains of Marathon by John Varley. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 19,120.00 (€ 29,284.45), 59% above the upper estimate. This high result makes The Plains of Marathon the most expensive artwork by John Varley that we have observed at auctions so far.
