JOHN SLOAN (1871-1951) Reading in the Subway etching, on laid paper, 1926, Morse's third (final) state, signed and titled in pencil, inscribed "Her feet beneath her petticoat / Like little mice peeped in and out / As if they feared the light" / (Sir John Suckling 1620)', from the intended edition of 100 (Morse notes that 85 were printed), with margins, framed Image: 5 x 4 in. (128 x 101 mm.) Sheet: 10 3 ⁄ 4 x 7 1 ⁄ 2 in. (273 x 191 mm.)
Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Reading in the Subway by John Sloan was sold in the Tales of the City: New York Prints and Photographs of the Early 20th Century auction at Christies in Sydney in August this year. The price achieved of USD 2,394.00 (€ 2,208.69) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as USD 2,000.00 – 3,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by John Sloan achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Corpus Christi Procession in November 2016 with an auction result of USD 607,500.00 (€ 574,305.16).

Die Arbeit Reading in the Subway von John Sloan wurde im August diesen Jahres in der Auktion Tales of the City: New York Prints and Photographs of the Early 20th Century bei Christies in Sydney versteigert. Der dabei erzielte Preis von USD 2.394,00 (€ 2.208,69) lag im Rahmen der Erwartungen – die Schätzpreisspanne war von dem Auktionshaus zuvor mit USD 2.000,00 – 3.000,00 angegeben worden. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von John Sloan erzielen.
