Artwork auctioned at nine times the upper estimate price
When the work Samuel Barrett by John Singleton Copley was auctioned at Christies in New York in January 2011, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - USD 40,000.00 but the actual price achieved was more than nine times as high at USD 386,500.00 (€ 281,808.24). Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by John Singleton Copley; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Portrait of James Tilley (1707-1765) sold at auction in January 2006 with the realized price of USD 374,400.00 (€ 307,945.39).
